Mt Long'onot

For a different view of the Africa's Great Rift Valley and Hell’s Gate, a hike and a few laughs. At least that is what our crazy doctor Thomm tells us about Mt. Longonot.

I spent a few weeks in Kenya, Africa, and decided that Mount Kenya and Mt Kilimanjaro were for overachieving people I don’t know how to relate to. So Mt Longonot seemed like a really good alternative> :)

We got picked up early in the morning to make sure we had enough time for the trip and hike. You never know if you have a slow one in the group I guess.

Mt Longonot is really near Hell’s Gate. In fact we were told that it is a stratovolcano (I know, long word) and the reason why Hell’s Gate exists, as it is thought to have erupted in the 1860s.

The best part of the hike are the views of the Great Rift Valley and Hell’s Gate – indescribable. Seeing the wildlife so close is also pretty cool, with giraffes, zebras, buffalos and gazelles around the place.

All I can say is that it is well worth the hike. And I will never forget how amazing a Stoney tastes after getting down from the mountain – it’s like heaven!

Ultimately, it was a 7 hour hike with incredible views that were only made better by African sense of humour of our guides. Well worth the pain.
