Watamu Coast Tour

Is the city stressing you out? Need to chill and recharge? This one is for you. This is what our businesswoman Kim was after and she does a better job at describing the trip than we do!"

Working in Nairobi was always great. The rush from the city, the vast amounts of people you encounter every day. It never got boring. But, let's face it, it's a bit stinky and overcrowded at times.

So I booked the Voluntours trip to Watamu. It was presented to me as a week full of relaxation, sun and fun activities, and that was exactly what it was. We went with a group of people who had also booked the trip and with the slightly crazy Voluntours team who drove overnight to make sure we enjoyed the maximum amount of days at the beach! The house we stayed was just actually on the beach, surrounded by palm trees. What a view! From the porch you could already see the ocean and hear the waves. And to make it even better, you can sleep on the porch (under a mosquito net if you prefer not to be eaten alive by them)

Each morning we would start with a swim in the ocean even before we had breakfast or the sun getting to strong: if you are a light-skinned like me, I would advise you to make the most of the morning and late afternoons to save your skin and escape the heat. When the sun becomes less strong later on the day, we would usually all swim and play games on the beach while the sun is setting. Walking back we would meet with little crabs running over the sand.

Next to all the relaxation, there are plenty of activities to do. One day we went on a boat trip (sorry to some of the team members who couldn’t go to this trip) to the deep waters. This was really fun as we spotted dolphins everywhere! Jumping up from the water and swimming underneath the boat. I had never been so close to dolphins before.
Next was snorkeling, so I still had to get the hang of it, but once I got a good look of the life underneath me I was absolutely amazed.
Tons of small colorful fish were swimming aimlessly, not bothered by me looking at them. A great experience.

On the last day we were also taken to see Mombasa to visit Ft Jesus on our way to Nairobi. It's a small, beautiful city.

All in all, the trip to Watamu was one of my favorites weeks in Kenya. Access to the beach all the times and a list of fun activities to choose from but most of all I liked that there was no pressure to do anything. No rush, no responsibilities. Just taking the time to enjoy the beautiful beach and the chill atmosphere. And not to forget, I’d also highly recommend that you go explore the small towns in the area, as the culture seems very different from other parts in the country.

Watamu, I'm coming back soon!
