Who are we, you ask?
We are a social enterprise travel agency, passionate about Kenya and about supporting sustainable projects that build sustainable minds full of dignity.
With Voluntours Adventures, there are no hidden costs. This is your trip, so we will be flexible with the itinerary and adjust as we go. We want to be able to show you the real Kenya, with the best lodges and the best views but also getting to know a little bit about the local community, the local culture and your impact in it.
All of our projects are run by our non profit Marafiki Community International and are build to be sustainable solutions to the issues facing local communities. We are passionate about the potential of Maasai Mara communities and have invested in two main projects in the area.
Ripoi Primary School, Ripoi, Maasai Mara.
Education features as number 4 on the UN Development Goals of 2030, and that is no surprise. Traditionally, Maasai people have not been interested in education and as a result the illiteracy rates are high in this community.
However, in 2015, this community began to educate their children and we cannot be happier to have been a part of it.
We have seen Ripoi Primary School go from outdoor classes under a tree to a 5 classroom Primary School with 250 children. Most of these children are the first in their families to learn how to read and write, and speak English.
The project will continue to expand as the need increases. The next phase should see the school set up lodgings for the boys who have to take care of the cattle to have a chance to be educated at night. We believe in projects that respect and work around cultural aspects like this.
We continue to support the school with learning resources and we visit it on our way to the camp when we can access it. The roads to the school are not accessible with our van during the rainy season unfortunately!
Water Project, Ololaimutua, Maasai Mara.
The reasons why we are so passionate about water go beyond the fact that access to clean water is a human right and one of the UN’s 2030 Development goals.
If you have ever visited Maasai Mara and entered thorugh the Ololaimutua Gate you will have passed a little stream of water. Children bathe here and also fetch water for washing and cooking. This means that they have to cut trees for firewood and boil it a few times to try to make it potable.
Maasai Mara is ranked number 1 on TripAdvisor every year and we feel that it is our responsibility to ensure that its community has access to water.
The water project is currently able to provide clean water to a nearby population of 5,000 and will continue to be extended as more funds are gathered. The water source is an undercurrent spring that is naturally ready for human consumption, and the community no longer have to boil it.
As a result of a clean source of water closer to home, children are free to go to school, rather than being sent to fetch water. Women are also more free for their business enterprises. It’s a win-win for all.
All of our safari adventurers get to visit this project and see the impact first hand
